From October 9 to October 13, 2017, the College of Public Health approved "environmental hygiene and epigenetics" as an excellent overseas course for undergraduates from the Academic Affairs Office of Jilin University, which lasted for 5 days and 30 class hours, was successfully completed. This course is taught by Professor Fang Mingzhu, Department of environmental health, School of public health, Rutgers University, USA. The main contents include epigenetic and environmental interaction, genetic variation and susceptibility to environmental diseases, environmental exposure and diseases, etc.
In order to ensure the teaching effect of this overseas course, before the course was taught, the team in charge of the course communicated with Professor Fang through e-mail for many times to discuss the details of the specific teaching content, assessment method, speech form, etc. Before the specific teaching of the course, under the initiative of Professor Liu Yawen, deputy dean of teaching in the school of public health, a teaching arrangement meeting organized by Li Peng, the teaching secretary, was held to discuss how to cultivate teachers, improve the autonomous learning ability and team spirit of undergraduates, and train graduate students to participate in teaching and management. The teaching process includes class explanation, class discussion, students' questions and group speech. After the students report the speech, Professor Fang first raises questions, and the students answer the questions in groups. Then Professor Fang comments on the questions one by one. Professor Fang spoke highly of the oral expression and the ability of reading and understanding English literature of the students majoring in preventive medicine in 2013. He believed that the students could quickly and accurately grasp the contents of the literature in such a short time, which fully proved that the students had a high level of English and scientific research quality.
After careful preparation and organization, the introduction of overseas courses has achieved fruitful results. According to the feedback information collected anonymously, 81% of the students are very satisfied with the teaching effect, and 100% of the students think that the setting of the overseas courses is of great help to their professional knowledge, oral English and listening.
During the lecture, Professor Fang Mingzhu also gave a lecture entitled "circadian rhythm disorder and the risk of breast cancer" to the teachers and students of the school of public health.
