The Department of Occupational and Environmental Health is evolved from the Department of Occupational Health and the Department of Environmental Health both of which was established in 1978 and merged in 2005. The discipline of Occupational and Environmental Health was authorized to offer Master Degree program in 1986, to offer Master Degree in Occupational Health and Environmental Health in 1994, to offer Ph.D Degree program in 2009, to offer Post-doc program in 2010. There are eight faculty members in the Department, among the eight faculty members, 2 are professors, 3 are associate professors, 3 are lecturers, 5 have Doctoral Degree, 1 is studying for his Ph.D Degree, 1 is the supervisor for Ph.D Degree student, four are supervisors for Master Degree students.

Teaching Activities

The faculty members of the Department teach Environmental Health, Occupational  Health and Occupational Medicine, Air physichemical Test, Emergency response to Public Health Emergency to undergraduate students majoring in Preventive Medicine, Health Detection, Nutrition and Food Science; teach Preventive Medicine and Sanitation to undergraduates majoring in Radiation Medicine, Health Law, Medical Informatics, 5-year Medicine program, 7-year medicine program and 8-year medicine program; teach Modern Environmental Health, Modern Occupational Health, and Advanced Public Health etc to graduate students.  The faculty members have been awarded the prize for excellent achievements of teaching twice, two faculty members were award excellent contribution to the development of medicine education by Norman Bethune Health Science Center Jilin University, 2 were winners of teaching competition held by School of Public Health Jilin University.

Research

The research interests for the faculty members of the Department include, environmental hazards and health, occupational hazards and health, typical environmental estrogen-like pollutants and health effects, susceptible genes for diseases pertinent to environmental exposure, environmental hazards and cancer development, safety of drinking water and health, occupational chemicals and health, environmental pollutants and prevention strategies.

The faculty members of the Department have been funded over 50 grants within last five years by National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Department of Science and Technology of Jilin Province etc. Within the last five years, the faculty members of the Department have published over 100 scientific papers, 25 have been published in peer-reviewed SCI journals.

Contribution to textbook compiling

The Department has cultivated more than 50 graduate students to earn their Master Degree in scientific research and over 50 in Master of Public Health, 6 to obtain their Ph.D Degree. 5 to 8 student are recruited into the graduate program in Environmental Health and Occupational Health for Master Degree study, 2-3 for Ph.D. Currently, 13 students are studying for their Master Degree, 14 for their MPH, 3 for their Ph.D, 1 for post-doc.
